How to Increase Virtual Memory in Windows

Virtual memory, also known as the swap file which uses part of your hard drive to effectively expand your RAM, allowing you to run more programs than it could otherwise handle. But a hard drive is much slower than RAM, so it can really hurt performance.

Generally, Windows automatically manages the Virtual Ram or Swap file which prevent overload in your real RAM. While you are using low RAM, It can also dramatically increase your PC performance and you can use more programs in a better way without any hassle.

How to Increase RAM in PC using Hard Disk Space?

If you receive warnings that your virtual memory is low, you’ll need to increase the minimum size of your paging file.

Windows sets the initial minimum size of the paging file equal to the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer, and the maximum size equal to three times the amount of RAM installed on your computer.

If you see warnings at these recommended levels, then increase the minimum and maximum sizes.

First, Go to Start button and right click on Computer then click on Properties.

In the left sidebar, click on Advanced system settings.

If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Now you will get a prompted dialog box.

On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click on Settings.

After that click on the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click on Change.

Now clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.

After that Under Drive[Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.

Now click on Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click on Set, and then click on OK.

Increases in size usually don’t require a restart for the changes to take effect, but if you decrease the size, you’ll need to restart your computer. We recommend that you don’t disable or delete the paging file.
